Even after it began raining a bit and melting, the foot of snow clung on to the top of the trash can on our porch. There had been four inches of snow stacking up on the black railing, but it had dropped off by 10 a.m. Big Guy Kitty made me feel guilty for not [...]

Amaryllis now has 3 full blooms. It is gorgeous! Thanks Kathy Varnell for the Christmas bulb! Wiggle tail, the cat, waiting to be fed on a cold, snowy morning. By Saturday afternoon the four-inches of snow was melted at our house, but it had stayed cold on Mt. Bolivar.
Toad stool on Thanksgiving

Found this toad stool on Thanksgiving day, when I was checking out the nearly six-foot Sun Dial that my son, Justin, built while visiting. My job now is to place rocks in the ground on the shortest day of the year, Dec. 21, so I can check the changes in the shadow on the solstices [...]
Red potatoes and yellow cottonwoods

Red potatoes! I just started plucking up the ones that were showing above the soil and soon there was not one, but two piles of potatoes. Still have to really get out there and dig them up. My house backed by yellow cottonwoods. The maple trees turned red or yellow and dropped their leaves within [...]
Can not believe how fast the garden has grown

Might as well put these up first, as the photos from July 15, just 11 days ago are so close and can be compared. I have not even fertilized. Just keeping everything well watered. Here is the watermelon, greenbeans and tomatoes in back. The short-season corn is five feet and tasseling. The Etna beans that [...]

Only took about an hour to weed the garden today. Can’t believe I have finally gotten in the habit of weeding every week, but it surely does keep the weeds down. Soaker hoses are doing a pretty good job, but have 2 of the 50 footers that do not seep as well as some of [...]

Forgot to post this pic of Mt. Bolivar at the south end of Scott Valley. Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 20-22, it snowed in Scott Valley and left fresh snow on Bolivar again. Sometime soon, we hope it will stop freezing at night so we can plant our gardens and they will grow!
Visit from Mt. Lion

Sue Hammond doesn’t realize that she confirmed it! I was talking to her husband, Carl, last week and he said that Sue reported seeing a mountain lion, when she was driving across Fay Lane in broad daylight a few days before. Thanks Sue, for verifying my feeling that the lion was back. I think it [...]
Callahan blossoms May 14, 2010

One of my favorite mixtures of color are the deep orange California poppies and lupine that bloom in May. I consider this a wild phlox, but my readers may give me the correct name in a comment. I looked for it a month ago and it wasn’t blooming yet, but last week it looked great [...]
